English-taught master’s programme

Automation and Instrumentation Engineering

Degree: Ing. · Duration: 2 years (4 semesters) · Mode: full-time · Language: English

Specialisations: Automation and Industrial Informatics · Instrumentation Technology
Programme guarantor: prof. Ing. Tomáš Vyhlídal, Ph.D.

About the programme

The programme focuses on advanced design methods for automation and instrumentation and their use in industrial systems. It connects process modelling and control with sensors, embedded systems and instrument development. It is intended for engineering bachelor graduates who want to develop their design and development skills.

Common studies provide theoretical and practical knowledge for industrial process monitoring and control, including artificial intelligence methods. They also address instrument construction and production technologies. A choice of specialisation develops either computing and control or instrument design in greater depth.

What you will learn

  • Model industrial systems and design their control.
  • Connect sensors and embedded systems with measurement and automation.
  • Apply rapid prototyping to hardware and software design.
  • Design industrial control and information systems.
  • Consider manufacturing technologies and functional requirements in instrument design.

Practical experience

Project work and the master thesis connect design, implementation and verification of an engineering solution. Depending on the specialisation, typical areas of work include:

  • Process monitoring: connecting sensors, data acquisition and visualisation.
  • Production system control: designing an algorithm and verifying it using a mathematical model.
  • Instrument design: developing mechanical or optomechanical parts with manufacturing in mind.

Specialisations

Automation and Industrial Informatics

Focuses on object-oriented programming, information and database systems, industrial communication, data processing and visualisation. It also develops optimisation methods, predictive control and monitoring of production systems.

Instrumentation Technology

Focuses on precision mechanics and mechanical and optomechanical instrument design. It considers functionality, operating conditions and manufacturing capabilities, together with wave optics and nanotechnology applications in instrumentation.

Careers and further study

  • Design, development and implementation of industrial control systems.
  • Industrial informatics and data system development.
  • Instrument design, precision mechanics and optomechanics.
  • Applied research in automation and instrumentation.

Graduates can pursue research in the doctoral programme Machine and Process Control.
